Two URL forms for the same YouTube Short
YouTube sometimes shows one vertical upload under a /shorts/ path and sometimes under the older /watch?v= pattern. Both can refer to the same underlying id. Confusion starts when people assume only one spelling is “the real Shorts link.”
This guide compares the two forms, when apps hand you each one, and how to paste safely into Vidzilla’s Shorts-oriented tools. It supports those tools; it does not replace their Analyze button.
The important habit is to compare the video id, not the fashion of the path. Once you treat both spellings as packaging for one upload, share sheets and desktop clicks stop feeling like contradictory sources.

In the Shorts player, the address commonly reads youtube.com/shorts/ followed by the video id. That path is a first-class public watch surface for vertical clips. Share sheets inside the Shorts UI usually mint this form.
Because the id sits in the path, there is no v= pair required. Damaging the path—cutting characters when forwarding in chat—breaks the id the same way a truncated query would.
On phones, the Shorts feed can hide the address behind gestures. When the location field is truncated or missing, use Share → Copy link from the Short itself rather than guessing a path from the channel name and title.
The classic watch form of a Short
The same upload can open as youtube.com/watch?v= with the identical id. Desktop search, related-video clicks, or copied links from non-Shorts surfaces often produce this shape even when the player still looks vertical.
Analyze does not need you to rewrite watch links into /shorts/ by hand. If the id is correct and the page is public, the watch form is a valid paste. Forcing a cosmetic rewrite risks typos.
You may also see extra query pairs for timing or playlist context. Those pairs do not redefine the upload. The v= token (or the matching Shorts path id) remains the identity you must keep intact.
How to tell you still have the same clip
Compare the id string, not the surrounding chrome. If /shorts/AbCdEfGhIjK and watch?v=AbCdEfGhIjK share the same eleven-character token, they name the same upload family.
Titles can be edited later; ids do not silently swap when YouTube restyles the player. When two tabs disagree, trust the id in the address bar over a similar thumbnail in a feed.
A practical check: open both forms if you have them, glance at the title and channel, and confirm the id characters match character-for-character. Cosmetic differences in the path never outweigh an id mismatch.
Share wrappers and in-app browsers
Messaging apps may wrap Shorts URLs in their own redirect hosts. Open the link once, wait until the location bar shows youtube.com (or youtu.be), then copy. Copying the wrapper too early can leave a tracking hop that never settles on the id.
In-app browsers sometimes hide the full address. Use the share menu’s Copy link action from YouTube itself when the URL field is incomplete or truncated with an ellipsis.
If a friend pastes a link with punctuation glued to the end—periods, parentheses, or emoji—trim those characters before Analyze. The id must remain contiguous; trailing chat fluff is a common silent failure.
What still fails even with a perfect Shorts URL
Private uploads, members-only Shorts, and age gates that block signed-out playback return empty format lists. Livestream-style or unfinished posts may not expose a stable on-demand file yet.
Vidzilla cannot remove platform watermarks that were burned into pixels by the creator’s export, and it cannot bypass DRM. If the page will not play anonymously in a normal browser, Analyze will not invent access.
Password-style gates and login-only libraries belong in the same bucket: public Analyze stops where a private window without credentials also stops. Fix the access problem first; switching between /shorts/ and watch spellings will not open a locked upload.

Prefer the Shorts tool when you know you are saving a vertical Short and want that workflow’s labeling. The general YouTube video downloader can also accept a Shorts id when the page is public—pick one tool and stay consistent for the session.
After Analyze, choose height and container deliberately. Confirm the finished file size and a quick playback scrub before you close the tab.
Either URL form is fine as long as the id is complete. Spend your attention on public playback and a careful quality pick, not on rewriting paths for appearance.
Habits that keep both forms reliable
Copy once from the player you trust, paste without retyping, and refuse chat punctuation glued to the end of the string. If you must share the link with someone else first, send it on its own line.
When a Short also appears on a channel’s Videos tab as a standard item, either URL form still works; just avoid copying the channel grid address that lacks an id.

Must I convert a watch link into /shorts/ before downloading?

Why do my phone and laptop show different URL shapes?
Different surfaces mint different spellings. The Shorts player favors /shorts/; search and related clicks often favor watch?v=. Compare the id; the spelling difference alone is not a problem.
Can I download a Short that only plays when I am logged in?
No. Analyze is signed out. Login-only Shorts, members-only uploads, and other gated players return no formats. Confirm anonymous play in a private window before retrying.
Do youtu.be links count as a Shorts form?
They are another single-id packaging. Paste them when the id is complete; you do not need to expand them manually if Analyze accepts the short host. They are not a third “kind” of Short—only another wrapper around the same id.
What if the share sheet gives a link without /shorts/ in it?
That can still be the correct Short via watch?v=. Use it if the id matches the clip on screen. Do not reject a watch form solely because the word “shorts” is missing from the path.
