What MP4 is, in one paragraph

MP4 is a container: a wrapper holding a picture track, a sound track, and a little bookkeeping about how the two line up. The picture inside an MP4 is normally H.264 or H.265, and the sound is normally AAC. Players, phones, televisions, browsers, and editing software have accepted that combination for years, which is why people ask for an MP4 by name.

Plenty of sites publish other containers, so a list with no MP4 in it is a fact about that upload rather than a problem with the results. Here is what each one means in practice.

• WEBM holds VP9 or AV1 video with Opus sound. Browsers, VLC, and current phones play it. Older televisions, older set-top boxes, and some editing suites refuse it.
• M4A is audio on its own, listed when the page keeps the sound in a separate file. There is no picture in it.
• MOV is Apple's container and is close kin to MP4. Apple devices and most editors take it without complaint.
• M3U8 is a playlist that points at a stream split into segments. The row still downloads as one finished file.
• When the list is WEBM only, take the row you want, save it, and convert it afterwards with a converter you already use. The saved file is a normal file on your disk at that point.

Sending a file to someone whose device you do not know

When you download for yourself, the player on your own machine settles the question and almost anything works. When the file is going to a colleague, a client, a relative, or a shared drive, you have no idea what will open it at the other end.
