The uploader picks the audience before anyone presses play
Vimeo hands the person uploading a video a menu of privacy settings, and the choice they make is stored against the video rather than written into its address. Two Vimeo links can look identical and behave differently, because the difference lives in that menu.
Vidzilla reads the page from our servers, signed in to nothing. Whatever the page hands a signed-out visitor is what gets reported back to you. Knowing which setting is in force explains every result described below.
A public video and what it returns
A public video is listed on Vimeo and plays for anybody who opens it. Paste the address of the video page, press Analyze, and the results list reports each published file with its height and its size in megabytes.
Vimeo encodes an upload into a tidy ladder, so the list is short and easy to read. Choose the row that matches the screen you will watch on, then press Download file on that row.
Unlisted videos are open to whoever holds the address
An unlisted video is kept out of Vimeo search and off the uploader's profile, and it still plays for any visitor holding the address. Conference organisers and film clients use this setting to circulate a cut without publishing it.
No sign-in stands in the way, so an unlisted address is read here exactly as a public one is and the rows appear. The uploader can narrow the setting afterwards, and the same address then stops returning anything.
A password sits in front of the file
A password-protected video loads a short form where the picture belongs. Our servers have nowhere to type a password, so the form is what gets read and the results list comes back empty.
Holding the password yourself changes nothing about that request, because the reading does not run inside your browser session. Watch the video on Vimeo with the password, and ask the uploader directly when you need the file itself.
Videos fenced to one website
Vimeo lets an uploader allow playback only on domains they name. The video then plays inside the embed on that company's site and refuses every other request, including one that opens the Vimeo page on its own.
That produces an empty result here even when you watched the same video minutes earlier on the site hosting it. The fence is a setting on the video, and no address you can copy walks around it.
The download switch inside Vimeo
Vimeo carries its own download control, and the uploader turns it on or off for each video. When it is on, a download button appears under the player for anyone watching, and that button hands over the file Vimeo prepared.
That switch is separate from the privacy setting. A public video can have downloads turned off, and an unlisted one can have them turned on. Vidzilla reports the files the page publishes, which is why a public video with the button hidden can still produce rows.
Vimeo row sizes and free download limits
Free use covers 3 downloads a day, and the count returns to three at midnight UTC. A single file has to come in under 150 MB on free. A recorded talk of forty minutes taken from the top row passes that ceiling, so read the size column before you commit to a row.
Pro removes the daily count, removes the size ceiling and removes the advertising. A prepared file expires on a short timer, so keep this tab open and start the transfer soon after the list appears. The saved copy lives on your device, and the film itself still belongs to the person who made it.
Questions about Vimeo privacy settings
Two Vimeo links look the same but only one gives me rows. Why?
Privacy is stored against the video rather than written into the address, so identical-looking Vimeo links can carry completely different settings and produce different results here.
Does an unlisted Vimeo video work on this page?
Yes, provided the uploader has not changed the setting since you were given the address. Unlisted means hidden from search, not closed to visitors holding the link.
I know the password for the video. Where do I enter it?
There is no field for it here, and typing it into Vimeo would not help either, because the reading happens on our servers rather than inside your own signed-in browser.
The video plays on a company website but returns nothing here. What is happening?
The uploader restricted playback to that company's domain. The video refuses any request that arrives from anywhere else, and an empty results list is the accurate report of that refusal.
There is no download button under the player. Does that mean the video is blocked?
No. That button is a separate setting the uploader controls, and a public video can publish files for playback while keeping the button hidden from viewers.
Why is a long Vimeo talk larger than the free limit?
Runtime and resolution multiply together. Forty minutes at a tall resolution passes 150 MB, so take a shorter row from the list or use Pro to lift the ceiling.
