What the 2160p label on a row means

A row marked 2160p holds a picture 3840 pixels wide and 2160 pixels tall. That is the figure the industry sells as 4K, and it is four times the pixel count of a 1080p picture. Some sources publish 2160p under a slightly different width, such as 4096 pixels for material that came from a cinema camera, and the row still names the height so you can identify it.

The resolution figure describes the frame. It does not describe how sharp the footage looked when it was shot. A recording made on a phone in poor light and published at 2160p carries the same pixel count as a studio recording and far less detail. Read the resolution as the size of the canvas rather than a verdict on the picture.

Why the 2160p row weighs so much more than the 1080p row

Four times the pixels need considerably more data to describe, and publishers give the 2160p encode a much higher bitrate to keep it looking clean in motion. The result is that a 2160p row of a ten-minute video routinely lands several times the size of the 1080p row of the same ten minutes.

Two other numbers on the source push that figure further up.

• Frame rate. A 2160p file recorded at 60 frames per second carries twice as many frames as the same footage at 30, and the size follows.
• Codec. Older encodings need more data for the same picture than newer ones, so two 2160p rows of similar length can differ widely in size.
• Scene content. Fast motion, rain, confetti, and crowd shots all resist compression, so a busy 2160p clip outweighs a static one of equal length.

A source that never published 4K has no 4K file to give

The results list reports the files the page is actually serving. If the person who uploaded the video published nothing above 1080p, the highest row you will see is 1080p, and no tool anywhere can change that. Enlarging a 1080p frame to 2160 pixels tall invents pixels; it does not recover detail that was never recorded.

This is the single most common disappointment on this page, and the ceiling belongs to the source rather than to the downloader. Before you go looking for another tool, check the quality menu inside the original player. If that menu stops at 1080p, the 4K version does not exist.

High resolution and the 150 MB ceiling on free use

When a 4K file is worth the storage and when it is not

A 2160p file earns its size on a large television, on a 4K monitor, and in an editing timeline where you intend to crop into the frame or stabilise the shot. In all three cases the extra pixels do visible work.

On a phone screen the extra pixels are wasted. A phone display cannot show them, the file eats storage, and older handsets stutter on playback because decoding 2160p is demanding work. For a phone, pick the 1080p row and keep the difference in storage.

Saving the file once you have chosen a row
