Post addresses and app share addresses

A 9GAG post has its own page, and the address of that page carries a short identifier made of letters and numbers. That address is what this page reads. Scrolling the front page or a tag listing gives you an address that stands for a stream of posts, and a stream has no single clip behind it.

In the app, tap the share control under the post and choose the option that copies a link. The address you get points at the same post as the one in a desktop browser, so it works here without any editing. If you copied something that opens the app store or a promotion page instead, open the post in a browser and take the address out of the bar.

These clips are measured in a handful of megabytes

The format on this site is a few seconds of footage designed to loop, and the files reflect that. A typical post is a small number of megabytes, which is far under the 150 MB ceiling that applies to a single file on a free account. Size is rarely the thing that stops you here.

The number that does matter on a free account is the daily count. Free use covers 3 downloads per day, and on a site built for scrolling through dozens of posts that limit arrives quickly. Pro removes the daily count, removes the size ceiling, and removes the advertising.

Silent clips and clips with sound added by the poster

A large share of posts here started life as an animation or a muted recording, and the file genuinely has no audio track in it. When you save one of those and your player shows no sound, nothing went wrong in the transfer. The clip is silent at the source.

Other posts have a soundtrack the person who uploaded it added on top, usually music or a voice line. Those come through in the saved file the same way they play on the page. If you want to know which kind you have before you download, unmute the player on the post and listen; what you hear there is what lands on your device.

Posts that are an image rather than a video

Plenty of what looks like a clip in a feed is a still picture, and a still picture has no video file behind it. Analyze reports the video the page is serving, so an image post returns an empty list. That is the correct answer rather than a failure.

Two shapes are easy to mistake for video, and both are worth recognising before you paste.

• A long stitched image, where several panels are stacked into one tall picture that you scroll through.
• An animated image that plays in a loop but is stored as a picture format rather than as a video file.
• A post whose preview frame is animated in the feed while the post itself opens a still.

Reading the results for a very short clip

Because the source clips are small, the list is usually short. You will often see one row, sometimes two, and the difference between them is resolution. Take the larger row if you plan to view the clip on anything wider than a phone. Take the smaller row if you are sending it on through a messaging app that compresses attachments anyway.

What you are entitled to keep

The person who made the clip owns it, and reposting is common on this kind of site, so the account that posted it is often not the creator. Save clips for your own viewing, save your own uploads, and get permission before you publish someone else's work anywhere.
