What you give up in MP3

Phones, cars, and USB sticks
Phone music apps differ. Some play FLAC; many older devices and locked-down work phones do not. MP3 remains the interchange format that fills those gaps without installing extra codecs.
Car USB playback often expects MP3 or AAC on FAT32 sticks. FLAC-only folders show as empty or skip tracks. Convert before you leave for a trip, then copy the MP3 folder to the stick.
FAT32 has a per-file size ceiling that ordinary MP3 tracks never hit. The risk is folder chaos, not file size. Keep album folders shallow and names simple so head units can index them.
Bluetooth speakers that claim “hi-res” still often receive a compressed stream from the phone. A solid MP3 encode is the practical travel format even when the home archive stays FLAC.
Albums and batch folders
Convert in album order. Matching filenames and track numbers prevents shuffle libraries from scrambling a live set. Include disc numbers in names for multi-disc releases.
Batch upload covers a folder within converter limits. After the batch, play the first track, a quiet middle track, and the last track. That sample catches mute failures and tagging misses early.
Store MP3 travel copies in a Music/Travel tree and FLAC in Music/Archive. Mixing both in one phone sync set wastes space and confuses which file is the master.
If a single track fails, convert that file alone with a fresh upload. One corrupt FLAC should not block the rest of the album.
