Use the address of the post itself

The address has to point at one post. A subreddit front page, a user's profile, a saved list, or a search result holds many posts and no single video, so Analyze has nothing to return from any of them.

On a computer, click the title of the post so it opens on its own page, then copy the address out of the bar. In the mobile app, use the share button on that post and choose Copy link. Either way you end up with an address that contains the name of the community and the identifier of that one post, and that is what this page reads.

Many posts are links to a video somewhere else

Reddit carries two different kinds of video post. In one, the video was uploaded to Reddit and plays inside the post. In the other, the post is a link, and the picture you see in the feed is a thumbnail of a page on another site. The second kind is common in news, sport, and clip communities.

When the post is a link, the file lives on the site being linked to, and that site's page address is what produces a download. Open the post, click through to the destination, wait for the video to start playing there, then copy the address you have landed on and analyze that instead. If Analyze on the Reddit address returns an empty list and the post carries an outbound link, this is almost always the reason.

Why one post gives you a video row and an audio row

Video that was uploaded to Reddit is stored as two separate files. The picture is one file and the sound is another, and the player puts them together while you watch. That storage decision is why the results for a single post can show a video row with no sound in it alongside a short audio row.

What you take depends on what you want out of the post.

  • For an ordinary copy with sound, take the largest combined row when the results offer one, because it already carries both parts.
  • When the list separates them, download the video row and the audio row, then put them together in any video editor or in a player that accepts an external audio track.
  • For a clip that was silent to begin with, a video row on its own is the whole post. Plenty of Reddit video has no soundtrack at all.
  • For a sound bite, a song, or a spoken clip you want on a phone, the audio row on its own is smaller and is all you need.

Posts that cannot be read

Three states end the attempt, and none of them is a fault in the download.

  • The community is private. The post is served only to approved members, so a request from outside receives the join screen rather than the video.
  • The community is quarantined. Reddit puts an interstitial warning in front of the content, and the page behind it is not delivered to anyone who has not passed that screen.
  • The post was deleted or removed by a moderator. The file is gone from Reddit's servers, and nothing can bring it back.

Crossposts, comment links, and old addresses

A crosspost carries the video from the original post into a second community. Both addresses describe the same file, so either one works. If the crosspost returns nothing, open the line that names the original post and use that address.

An address that points at a single comment still belongs to the post above it, and that post is what gets read. Old-style addresses beginning with old.reddit.com and share links from the app both resolve to the same post and are treated the same way.

Which of the two files you end up with

Press Download file on the row you want and the transfer starts at once. On a desktop the file arrives in your Downloads folder. On a phone it goes to device storage or the Files app, depending on the browser you opened this page in. Keep the tab open until the transfer finishes.

There is no account and no email address involved. Free use has a file size ceiling, which ordinary Reddit clips sit well under, and Pro raises that ceiling and removes the advertising.

Questions about Reddit posts and video files

Why do the results show a video row and a separate audio row?

Reddit stores the picture and the sound of its own hosted video as two files and joins them in the player. Take a combined row when one is offered, or download both rows and merge them in an editor.

The post is a link to another site and Analyze found nothing. What now?

Click through to the site the post links to, let the video play there, and copy that page's address. The file lives on that host, so its page is the one that produces a download.

Can I download a video from a private subreddit?

No. A private community serves the membership screen instead of the post, so there is no public file to read. An empty result there is the correct answer.

Do I paste the subreddit address or the post address?

The post address. Open the post on its own page first. A subreddit address covers many posts and has no single video behind it.

The post was deleted. Is there any way to get the video?

No. Once the post is removed the file is no longer served, and Vidzilla reads only what a page is serving at the moment you press Analyze.

Does a share link from the Reddit app work?

Yes. The share link resolves to the same post as the address in a browser bar, so paste it above and press Analyze.
