Download a YouTube live stream after it becomes a replay

Live playback and finished files are different objects

While a YouTube stream is live, viewers receive segments as they are produced. There is no complete media file sitting on a server waiting for a bulk download of the entire event. Tools that claim to download a live stream in real time are either recording the player or collecting fragments as they appear—both are different products from transferring a finished published file.

How to know the archive is ready

After the host ends the stream, YouTube processes the recording. The same URL often becomes a replay, or the channel publishes a new watch page for the archive. Open the page and confirm you can scrub the timeline from start to finish like a normal video.

Processing can take minutes or longer for multi-hour events. Refresh until the player offers full seeking. Then copy the watch URL from the address bar or Share. Spot-check that the listed duration matches the event you watched.

Some creators delete the live replay or keep it members-only. If the archive never becomes a public on-demand video, this page will not invent one. Ask the channel whether a public replay will be posted.

Quality and size on long live archives

Live archives are often long. File size scales with runtime and chosen quality. A three-hour 1080p replay can exceed the free 150 MB ceiling even when a short clip from the same channel would not.

Read the size on each results row before you commit. On free use, pick a lower height if the large rows sit over 150 MB. Pro removes the per-file size limit when you need the tallest encoding of a long event.

An audio-only row is useful for talk streams and panels when you do not need the camera feeds. It usually lands far under the video size for the same runtime and still counts as one free download when completed.

Clips, highlights, and the full archive

Creators sometimes publish short highlight uploads separately from the full live replay. Those are ordinary videos with their own watch URLs. Download them like any other YouTube video if you only need the highlight.

Do not assume a highlight URL contains the entire stream. Check the runtime on YouTube before you spend a free download. The archive page is the one with the full event length.

Premiere videos that have not unlocked yet behave like live countdowns: wait until the premiere is a normal on-demand watch page before you paste the URL here.

Steps after the stream ends

Wait for the replay to support full seeking. Copy the watch URL. Paste it on this page and run Analyze. Choose a row that fits free or Pro limits. Download and keep the tab open until the browser finishes.

Open the file and spot-check the start, a midpoint, and the ending so you know the archive is complete. Rename the file with the event date and title so it does not sit forever as a generic string in Downloads.

If Analyze fails after the stream ended, confirm the replay is public and not members-only. Try again after processing finishes if the page still shows a live badge or a processing message.

Free counts for event archives

Free use allows three completed downloads per day. Saving both a low-quality and high-quality copy of the same archive spends two downloads. Prefer one deliberate choice per event.

Teams that archive every weekly stream should plan Pro for size and daily allowance. Free use is enough for occasional public replays under 150 MB.

Analyze does not spend a download. Failed empty results do not spend one either. Only a completed file does. Plan your three free slots around the archives you truly need offline.

Rights on live recordings

Live concerts, sports, and licensed panels are often restricted. A public replay you can play signed out may still disallow redistribution. Keep personal offline copies only when you are entitled to them.

Company all-hands streams may be confidential even when the URL leaked. Follow workplace policy before saving or forwarding copies to people outside the meeting.

If the creator disables replay, respect that choice. Do not treat a missing archive as a bug in the downloader or as a reason to screen-record against the creator’s intent.
