When PNG is the right next format
HEIC keeps phone photos small on the camera roll. Design tools, some print RIPs, and cutout workflows often refuse HEIC and ask for PNG instead. PNG gives those apps a decoded picture with room for further edits without restacking JPEG artifacts the same way a second JPG encode would.

File size and portal limits
PNG from a modern iPhone frame can be tens of megabytes. Plan disk space and portal upload caps before you convert an entire trip folder in one sitting.
If a portal rejects the PNG for size, resize or compress after conversion only when that destination allows some quality loss. Do not shrink the HEIC first if you still need full resolution for print.
For a web-only deliverable after the design pass, export JPG or WEBP from the finished art rather than shipping the full-size PNG to every visitor.
Cutouts and transparency later
Camera HEIC files are usually opaque photos. PNG still matches what compositing tools expect when you add a mask or remove a background in a later step.
Convert to PNG first, then run a background remover on the PNG when you need the subject on a clean backdrop. Flattening to JPG before the cutout forces an opaque fill and removes the alpha channel you need for soft edges.
Check hair and fabric edges at 100% zoom after the automatic cut. Soft fringes may need a manual touch in the image editor. That editing step belongs on the PNG, not on the original HEIC inside a tool that cannot open it.
Print shops and design handoffs
Print vendors and freelance designers often list PNG or TIFF on intake forms. HEIC confuses those forms even when the picture looks fine on your phone.

Masters, rights, and cleanup

Batch travel folders without losing track
A weekend shoot can produce hundreds of HEIC files. Batch conversion helps, but rename keepers as you go. A folder of IMG_####.png files is hard to search six months later.
Convert the selects you will edit first. Leave rejects as HEIC on the phone or card until you are sure you will not need them.
