The avatar is published at a modest number of pixels
The platform takes whatever photograph a person uploads and republishes a small copy of it. That copy has to appear beside a comment, in a list of accounts you follow and in a corner of a playing video, so it is deliberately kept light.
The full-size original never leaves the uploader's own phone. What a reader is served is the small copy, and that copy sets the limit on anything anybody can save from the profile.
TikTok profile images are small squares meant for list and header UI. Enlarging them softens edges; the file never held poster-level detail.

Why a small picture cannot be turned into a large one
An image file holds a fixed count of pixels. Opening it in a viewer that fills a laptop screen spreads those same pixels across far more space, and the result is soft edges, flat skin and blocky hair.
Software that offers to enlarge a photograph fills the gaps by calculating what belongs between the pixels it has. The output is bigger and it carries no detail from the camera that took the shot. Sharpness comes from the original file, and the original file is with the person who uploaded it.
The circle belongs to the layout, not to the file
Avatars appear as circles across the whole platform, and the stored image is a square. The rounding is applied by the page as it draws, in the same way a shadow or a border is applied.
Your saved file therefore has square corners with the parts of the photograph the circle was hiding. Nothing was cut off by the download and nothing needs putting back.
Accounts that give back no picture at all
Not every profile serves an avatar to a reader who is not signed in.
- A private account withholds much of the profile from signed-out readers, and on many of them the picture is part of what is held back.
- An account that never chose a photograph shows the default placeholder the platform draws for an empty slot. That drawing is not a stored image, so there is nothing behind it.
- A suspended or removed account serves no profile page, and no page means no picture.
- An account that changed its handle leaves the old address pointing nowhere until somebody else takes that name.
Pasting the address of a profile and reading the result
The address you want is the profile one, the short address carrying the account name after the site name. A video address points at that video and hands back the clip rather than the avatar.
The list that comes back is one row long, because a profile page publishes a single picture instead of a ladder of encodings. Keep the tab open until the write finishes, which for a file this small is close to instant.
One tiny file against the daily count
An avatar is a few dozen kilobytes, so the 150 MB ceiling on a single free download has no bearing on it. The count does. Free use allows three downloads a day, and a picture spends one of them exactly as a full-length video would.
The count returns to three at midnight UTC, and Pro removes the count, the ceiling and the ads together. Bear in mind that an avatar is a photograph of a person, taken by somebody, and seeing it on a public profile is not permission to publish it elsewhere.
