Files go straight to your device.

Twenty-four hours, and then the post is gone

A Story is published with a deadline built into it. A day after the creator posts it, the platform stops showing it and stops serving the video behind it. That is the intended behaviour rather than a failure, and it applies to every account equally.

So the job on this page is a race with a clock you did not start. If a Story matters to you, save it in the hours after you first see it. Waiting until the evening to come back to something you watched at breakfast leaves very little of the window.

What the page gives back once the day is up

An address you collected yesterday still looks like a working address. The characters are intact and pasting it does no harm. The platform simply has nothing at the other end of it any more, so Analyze reports an empty result.

There is no archive to fall back on and no cached copy waiting elsewhere. Once the source stops serving a file, no downloader reaches it. An empty list in this situation is the accurate answer about the post.

How a Story differs from a post on the profile grid

An ordinary post stays on the creator's profile until they take it down. You can open it a year later, copy the address and save the video, and the file is served exactly as it was on the first day.

A Story never joins that grid. It sits above the profile picture for its day and then leaves. A creator who wants a clip to last publishes it as a normal post instead, which is why the same person can have a Story that vanishes and posts from last summer that are still in place.

Getting the address out of the app in time

Open the Story so it fills the screen and use the share control on it. Choose Copy link, which puts the address of that card on your clipboard. Paste it into the box on this page straight away rather than saving it for later.

If the share control offers no Copy link on a particular Story, the creator restricted sharing on it and there is no address to work with. Trying the same Story from a desktop browser is worth a moment, because the web version exposes the address in the browser bar.

Stories that were never open to you

Expiry is one reason a Story returns nothing. Access is the other, and the two look identical from outside.

  • A private account shows its Stories only to approved followers. Our servers read the page with nobody signed in, so being an approved follower yourself changes nothing about what they are shown.
  • A Story the creator deleted early is gone before the day is out, and deletion is final in the same way expiry is.
  • An address that points at a profile rather than a single Story card holds no one file, so nothing comes back from it.
  • An account that has been suspended takes its Stories with it, which reads the same as an expiry from the outside.

Small files, the daily count and the short timer

A Story card runs for seconds and is encoded for a phone, so the file is a handful of megabytes. It sits nowhere near the 150 MB ceiling on a single free download, and the transfer finishes in moments.

Free use covers three downloads a day, with the count returning at midnight UTC, and Pro takes away the count, the ceiling and the ads. Once a file is prepared it waits on a short timer, so press Download file while the row is in front of you. What you keep is a copy on your own storage, and the creator keeps the rights to what they recorded.

Questions about TikTok Stories

How long do I have to save a Story?

A day from the moment it was posted. After that the platform stops serving the video, and the address you copied returns nothing at all.

I copied the address yesterday. Why does it fail now?

The address is intact and the video behind it is not. Copying a link does not reserve the file, and the expiry applies to the post rather than to your clipboard.

Can an expired Story be recovered from anywhere?

No. Nothing on this page reaches a file the source has stopped serving, and there is no archive of expired Stories to fall back on.

Why does a Story disappear when the creator's other videos stay up?

Stories are published with an end time and ordinary posts are not. A post remains on the profile grid until the creator chooses to remove it.

The share control gives me no link for one Story. What now?

That creator restricted sharing on the card, so no public address exists for it. Opening the same Story in a desktop browser is worth trying before you give up.

Does following a private account let me save its Stories here?

No. Our servers read every page signed out, so a private account shows them a restriction notice regardless of what your own account can see.
